Forward Deployed Engineer Intern
Sit with practices, deploy AI agents into live EHRs, and own a production project on a small YC team.
About Beacon Health
Beacon Health is building the AI workforce for healthcare. Independent primary care practices are drowning in the administrative work behind value-based care: annual wellness visits, transition-of-care outreach, risk adjustment coding, quality measure gap closure, and referral management. This work is the reason physicians burn out and small practices sell to hospital systems.
We build AI agents that do that work directly inside the EHR, just like a human staff member would: log in, navigate the chart, parse complex documents, and enter the data. No API integration, no IT project, no waiting on a vendor's roadmap. A practice records a workflow once and we deploy an agent that runs across their entire patient panel.
Today our agents run in AthenaHealth, Epic, eClinicalWorks, Elation, NextGen and more, against real patient panels, under strict HIPAA standards, with full audit trails and human-in-the-loop review. We're a Y Combinator (W26) company and a very small team.
The role
You will work as a forward deployed engineer: close to the practices we serve, and close to the production systems those practices run on. You will have a dedicated mentor, but we treat interns as full colleagues. You will own a real project from design to rollout, sit in the messy parts of the EHR, advocate for your architecture, and ship code that impacts patient care.
Potential project focus areas
Agent Infrastructure
Build the Playwright and Chrome DevTools Protocol automation layer, session state recording, and self-healing UI recovery logic for legacy clinical portals.
Document Pipeline
Scale OCR and LLM extraction pipelines for scanned faxes, unstructured progress notes, and complex lab charts.
Evals & System Correctness
Engineer golden-master diffs and regression testing suites to ensure data fidelity on live patient records.
Core Product
Expand our Next.js and Convex application where clinical teams configure workflows, monitor agent execution, and handle exceptions.
We work in TypeScript (Next.js, React, Convex, Bun) and Python, on AWS, with frontier models. Direct experience with every tool is not required.
This is a paid internship. Applicants must be enrolled in a degree program to be considered.
What we're looking for

Engineering Foundations
Strong fundamentals in Python or TypeScript/JavaScript, with the flexibility to quickly pick up whichever language is less familiar to you.

Track Record of Building
You have built and shipped non-trivial software outside of coursework (side projects, open-source work, competitions, or prior internships) and can walk through the hardest technical tradeoffs you made.

Willingness to Get Hands-on & Unglamorous
You don't shy away from the weeds. Building production healthcare AI means extensive manual quality assurance, auditing dense medical billing codes, parsing tedious compliance rules, and stepping through complex DOM trees. You embrace the granular, manual work required to make an automated system bulletproof.

System Diagnostics
Comfortable debugging codebases you didn't write, reading raw API payloads, and inspecting unfamiliar HTML/CSS structures to trace root causes.

Extreme Rigor
You care deeply about accuracy. In healthcare, a silent failure or invented value is far worse than an explicit error.

High Autonomy
Comfortable operating through ambiguity. You take messy, under-specified problems, propose clear solutions, and execute end-to-end. You communicate clearly and promptly with teammates, and take ownership of your part in a project.
Bonus points
- Experience with browser automation (Playwright, Puppeteer, Selenium, or Chrome DevTools Protocol).
- Experience building production LLM applications beyond standard wrappers (structured outputs, agent loops, custom evaluation frameworks).
- Prior exposure to health data standards or clinical workflows.
